Saddie AKA MERcedes

The Cow Who Started It All

Every farm has a story, and ours began with a cow.

A few months after moving to the farm in 2018, we went to an auction and came home with a Jersey-Holstein cross who would completely change the direction of our lives. We loved her so much that we brought her home from the auction in our Mercedes. It didn’t take long to realize that perhaps a Mercedes wasn’t exactly the ideal farm vehicle, and before long, it was traded in for a farm truck!

She may have been our first cow, but she quickly became so much more than that. At around 1,200 pounds, she is quite literally a giant dog in a cow’s body. She loves people, loves attention, and has a way of making herself part of whatever is happening around her.

She is the cow who started our farm, the cow who taught us just how special the bond between people and animals can be, and the cow who holds a very special place in our hearts.

She is, quite simply, loved.

And without her, Hartzland Farm might not be what it is today.

Spider Bluechip

From Breeders Crown Champion to Farm Favorite

Before Spider Blue Chip came to Hartzland Farm, he had already lived quite a life.

Spider wasn’t just any racehorse. He was a Breeders Crown champion, a Grand Circuit winner, and a horse who earned more than a million dollars on the racetrack.

He was bred to race, trained to compete, and spent his younger years doing what Standardbreds do best—running.

But eight years ago, Spider came to Hartzland Farm.

And his life changed.

Today, you won’t find him racing around a track. You’ll find him enjoying farm life, taking things at his own pace, and doing something we think he’s even better at…

Making people smile. From Racehorse to Teacher

There is something incredibly special about an animal that has spent its life working alongside people.

Spider has an amazing story to tell, and when you meet him, you’re not simply meeting “a horse.”

You’re meeting a champion.

A horse that once competed in front of crowds and under the bright lights of harness racing now gets to spend his days enjoying the quiet of the farm.

And we want to share him with you.

Our horse experience gives visitors the opportunity to meet Spider, learn about his incredible racing career, hear what life is like for a Standardbred, and experience the bond that can develop between a horse and a person.

Whether you’ve loved horses your entire life or have never touched one before, Spider has a way of making you feel welcome.

There’s Something About Horses

Maybe it’s their size.

Maybe it’s the sound of them breathing beside you.

Maybe it’s the way they seem to know when you need a quiet moment.

Or maybe it’s simply the connection between two living beings standing together with nothing else required.

For us, that’s what Spider represents.

After everything he accomplished on the racetrack, he has become something different here at Hartzland Farm.

He is a teacher.

He is a friend.

He’s part of our family.

And now, he’s ready to meet yours.

Come Meet a Champion

Come hear his story.

Come meet the horse behind the name Spider Blue Chip.

Come give him a scratch, take a breath, and spend a little time with a horse who has seen both sides of life—from the excitement of the racetrack to the peacefulness of farm life.

Because sometimes the best part of a champion’s story isn’t how fast he could run.

It’s where he gets to spend the rest of his life.

Welcome to Spider’s Farm.

Our animal experiences aren’t just about getting close to a cow or feeding a goat.

They’re about slowing down.

They’re about stepping away from the noise of everyday life and spending time with animals that live in the moment. They’re about putting your phone away, taking a breath, feeling a soft muzzle, hearing a contented animal breathe, and allowing yourself to simply be.

We believe there is something incredibly special about the connection between people and animals.

Our experiences are designed to give children and adults a chance to experience that connection in a safe, peaceful, and meaningful environment.

For some people, it may be an opportunity to learn about farming and animals.

For others, it may be a special family experience.

For someone struggling with stress, loneliness, grief, or simply the weight of everyday life, it may be a chance to slow down and reconnect with themselves.

And for people like me who live with chronic pain, it may provide something especially valuable: a few moments when the pain isn’t the center of the world.
